Hylton gets support in Congress race

Local businessman Clint Hylton has earned the support of the Excelsior Springs Area Democratic Club in his effort to be elected to serve the Sixth District in the U.S. Congress.
Hylton, an agent with Shelter Insurance, was unanimously supported by the club last Thursday.
Hylton knows he has a battle on his hands. The Democratic primary is Aug. 3, and if Hylton is successful there, he will move on to challenge Republican Sam Graves, who has been the sixth district congressman since 2000.
"I feel like we've got to get Sam Graves out," Hylton said Thursday. "I support small business, famers and the people of Missouri, while Sam Graves has the support of big business, and very little of his campaign money comes from Missouri."
While Hylton admitted that Graves has done a few good things, he feels that overall the Tarkio Republican has not served the sixth district or the people of Missouri very well.
"My top priority, as you'll see on my Web site, is jobs, jobs, jobs," Hylton said. "I also want to look at health care -- I think it needs some tweaking. We haven't hit the nail on the head there yet."
He also puts education, especially higher education and the current budget crisis faced in schools everywhere, toward the top of his priorities.
Hylton, who worked on civic efforts in Liberty before coming to Excelsior Springs, is active in the local Chamber of Commerce and helped to resurrect Waterfest a few years ago. He's never run for public office before, however, and says he's frequently asked why he set his sights on something as lofty as a U.S. Congress seat.
"I've been thinking about this for quite some time," he said. "What I wanted to do is find where I could do the most good and the best job -- I feel like it's there, in Congress."
"The Excelsior Springs Area Democrats endorsed Clint Hylton unanimously because we have seen his ability to bring people together to solve problems," said Kevin Morgan, a member of the group, in a press release.
In the same release, Hylton said he was glad to have their backing. "As a small business owner in Excelsior Springs, I am honored to have the support of local Democrats," he said. "Over the coming months, I hope that our message of job creation, helping rural farmers and ending the decade-long big-business politics of Sam Graves, will earn the favor of citizens across the sixth district."
The Sixth Congressional District of Missouri includes Andrew, Atchison, Buchanan, Caldwell, Carroll, Chariton, Clay, Clinton, Cooper, Daviess, De Kalb, Gentry, Grundy, Harrison, Holt, Howard, Jackson, Linn, Livingston, Mercer, Nodaway, Platte, Putnam, Ray, Schuyler, Sullivan and Worth counties.
Hylton said his campaign will need financial support to be successful. To learn more, visit clinthylton.com.
