In his capacity as Excelsior Springs Chamber President, Hylton welcomes Larry D. Kay, Executive Director of Missouri Veterans Commission, at left, to the community during the Grand Opening of the Department of Veterans Affairs Excelsior Springs Outpatient Clinic.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs

With Missouri’s unemployment rate at over 9%, enough is enough! As a small business owner, I know firsthand the impact that a struggling economy has on individuals and their families. Helping a person attain a job should not be a political sticking point, but a responsibility for our leaders. As your Congressman, I would support initiatives that provide incentives for businesses to hire workers and for individuals to start up their own small businesses.

I also believe the 6th District has a green technology market that has not been tapped. By providing the funds necessary to encourage alternative energy, we can provide thousands of jobs to farmers and rural Missourians.

By funding projects for school and road construction, we can provide both jobs and needed renovations to the state of Missouri. As your Congressman, I would have voted for the Jobs for Main Street Act, which Sam Graves chose to vote against and stand with corporate interest. The Jobs Act included funding for renewable energy projects, water infrastructure, jobs in the public sector, and school and transportation renovations.

Rural Missouri

Farmers are the backbone of the 6th District and Missouri. The hard work of thousands of farmers provides jobs, food for people across the country, and moves us closer to alternative energy sources and off foreign oil. I am proud of my roots in rural Missouri and the small farm I live on in Polo. Helping Rural Missouri is not a political issue, it’s a personal issue.

I will fight to protect farmers from going out of business in these tough economic times because of weather disasters. Unlike Sam Graves who voted against $700 million of mandatory farm disaster assistance.

For farmers who are out of a job, I will not forget about you and support funding for rural businesses and housing. Sam Graves had that chance, but blew it by voting against $69 billion for rural business programs and low-income housing.

Education

As a graduate of college, here in the 6th District and parent, I know the great quality of education we have to offer. However, we must elect leaders who are willing to stand up for students and educators and not Washington bureaucrats. Quality education for our children must begin at an early age and I will support the expansion of programs for early childhood education and funding for teachers of early childhood education.

I have also dedicated much of my life to work with persons with developmental disabilities. Our nation must do more to support students with special needs and I will continue to be a voice for them in the Congress. Our special needs classrooms are understaffed, poorly equipped, and neglected. We must give every child an opportunity to succeed, not matter what!

In our tough economic times, a college education becomes even more important. The cost of education is skyrocketing and a young adult should not have to miss a quality education simply because of finances. As such, I support an increase in funding for community colleges and technical schools, so that we can develop a group of Americans with a strong skill set.

We must also help keep education affordable, which is why I am saddened at Sam Graves vote against the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, which would have provided more Pell Grants for at-need students, while decreasing the deficit by $87 billion. I will not let that happen on my watch.

Seniors

Our government has failed in its obligation to protect seniors. After years of hard work and dedication to this country, seniors deserve to retire without fear of poverty or foreclosure. I fully support efforts in Congress to protect social security from being spent on any other programs. Seniors paid decade’s worth of taxes for their future and they deserve to see that money.

I also support legislation to help seniors at risk of foreclosure on their homes. Many seniors have lived in their homes for years and deserve to spend their life enjoying the fruits of their labor. Instead of having Washington pay for tax cuts for big business or higher pay raises with social security, it is time to fully fund social security to help our seniors.

Veterans

There are few people who show more dedication to our country than the men and women of the armed services. These individuals voluntarily enlist in order to serve and protect this nation and I am proud to represent the 6th District, which has a proud tradition of service to our country. I am fed up with politicians paying lip service to our active members of the military and our veterans. We must do more to help those who help us on a daily basis.

I support legislation to give tax credits to businesses who hire veterans. Too often, a member of the military retires and is left without the employment necessary to survive. We must encourage employers to support our veterans.

We must also do more to reduce the out of pocket medical costs for retired service members. By reforming the VA and providing for our veterans, we can help them live the long and prosperous life that they deserve.

Special Interest Sam

Talking with citizens across the 6th District, I know you are fed up with politicians who let Washington and Special Interests run our government. It’s time to take back D.C. from incumbent politicians who forget where they came from. I pledge to you that I will always remember that I am a public servant, which means I work for you, not big businesses, or Washington insiders. Sam Graves chose to stand with big businesses by voting against taxing bonuses for AIG bosses, who received $165 million in bonuses after receiving a taxpayer funded bailout and voted against the Wall Street Accountability and Consumer Protection Act, standing with Wall Street, not Main Street Missouri. As your Congressman, I would have voted with working, middle-class Americans; the very people paying for AIG bailouts and bonuses. As your Congressman, I will stand with you!
